Determining the Best Sunlight For Your Garden

!±8± Determining the Best Sunlight For Your Garden

We know that all plants need sunlight to grow, but how much sunlight is ideal for your garden? I have had many people ask me where they should plant their garden in order to get the best sunlight possible.

There are a few things to consider, such as: the climate in your area, what type of plants you will be growing and also the land availability in your yard. Most plants require at least 6 - 8 hours of sunlight per day, so you will want to choose a garden plot that will allow them enough direct sunlight throughout the day.

Consider which side of the house you would like to plant your garden. Many people choose the east or west side of the house especially because they provide half a day of direct sunlight, and then a little bit of shade as the sun moves during the day. Watch the sunlight though, because you don't want your plants to be in the shade too much or else they may not flower properly or grow the right amount of food.

Some plants prefer a shady area, so research the type of plants that you are putting in. If a certain type needs less sunlight you may consider planting it closer to the house or close to a tree-- somewhere where it will get some direct sunlight every day but there is still some shade to help protect it from the blazing sun.

There are many different types of shade loving plants and also sun loving plants. You can actually plan your landscaping around the sunlight in your yard, carefully planning the type of garden you are putting in each area of your yard will help your be successful in your gardening because the plants will be less maintenance. It is always a good idea to talk with other gardeners in your area and maybe even contact a local agriculture center to see what the growing conditions are for your climate and region.
